Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary

When I was in the first grade, I wanted my name to be Mary so I changed it…without telling anyone. If I did tell them, they dismissed it as childish banter and went on about their day forgetting all about it. I had all my friends calling me Mary at school and at home, but adults didn’t seem to notice, because in my warped little mind I still answered to my birth name. Anyway, where was I….oh yeah, so six year old me changed her name to Mary, even wrote my name on my homework that way. No one said anything, so I kept on doing it thinking the deed was done. I was happy. My new name was Mary and when I grew up I would move to New York City and throw my hat into the air. (Some of you will get that.)
One day, my parents were called in for teacher-parent meeting. The teacher insisted I had not turned in any of my assignments for over two weeks. My parents defended me. They knew I had done my homework, because they watched me sit at the foot of their bed while we all watched TV every night. So, they call me in the room and ask me where my work was. Naturally, I told them I turned it in. The teacher was so confused. She pulled out a stack of papers and asked me to find my work. I went right to my page and pulled it out. As I handed it to the teacher, my parents smiled quite smugly if I remember correctly. Afterall, their child was brilliant and they were right. The teacher looked at the paper, pulled our her role book, scanned the list of names saw that the last names matched but not the first. When she showed it to my parents, they were confused. So, I had to explain to the stupid adults that I had changed my name. Imagine my surprise when they told me I couldn’t just change my name any ole time I wanted. Hmmpf.

There’s this reoccurring dream that I’ve had since I was in middle school and I continue to have it to this day. The location varies, but the situation is always the same! Somehow or another I’m stuck in a public place with no shirt and no shoes! Naturally, I’m filled with a sense of shame and embarrassment. I cover myself the best I can and run to hide, hoping someone will save me from my nudity. The funny thing is that no one else ever seems to notice. There’s no one pointing fingers and laughing. There’s no one asking me what happened to your clothes. There’s just me trying to be invisible and apparently succeeding, but unknowingly. I almost always wake up frantically grabbing at the sheets. *laughs* I asked a few friends if they ever had this dream, as I thought it was rather common, but none of them have admitted it. So, I’m either a weirdo or there’s some psychological reason for it. Hmmmm. Oh, yeah, that’s right, I’m a weirdo!

A Day at the Beach

Around this time last year, I was fortunate enough to meet some long time Second Life friends in the real world. It was an amazing weekend and over far too quickly and if I remember correctly, I think I even stayed a day longer than I originally planned. Mind you, Nikole kept my ass stoned from the time I got there until I left. Along with partaking in some pretty fine ass weed, Blondie’s RL took us all to a Japanese Steak house for dinner, where not only did Nik eat my yumyum (a really delicious sauce), but we found our official drink for the weekend. It was called A Day at the Beach and looks very much like the sky behind me. We had a grand weekend with that drink, by the pool…oh the stories and jokes…and the sunburn!
I’m so glad I can enjoy all the beaches and pools in SL without having to worry about getting a sunburn. Even with especially high SPF sunscreen, my RL self will still burn if I’m in the sun for more than an hour.

Holiday Weekend!

Whether you live in the U.S. and observe Memorial Day (not really a celebratory event) or in the UK where they have a bank holiday (that no one seems to know the reason for) or maybe you live somewhere else with a holiday today….for most people its been a three day weekend. In the US, regardless of the reason, a three day weekend usually means a cookout! It means a day outside, unless you live where I do at the moment….and here it simply means rain. Fortunately for me, I discovered (thanks to Facebook) a very cool new-ish weather app called WTForecast! This makes me laugh to no end and I’m sure my FB friends are quite tired of seeing me share my weather posts, but they are FUNNY! Okay, clearly I’m off track…*takes a minute to read back*….oh yeah, I was going to write about the different holidays. Nothing to really say about the bank holiday, cuz the only thing I can find about it is some jibberish about bank holidays in general, not an actual reason for this one in particular. Memorial Day, however, really should be considered a more somber occasion as its a day to recognize those that died while serving their country. But in the U.S. we are soooo commercialized its usually more like a day for sales and cookouts! Its a patriotic holiday at best, so I’ve donned some red, white, and blue….because like most Americans *hangs her head* I wasn’t thinking about what the holiday actually is, just that it was a three day weekend and what usually happens on three day weekends.
On that note, I am grateful for all the people that have served my country and my heart goes out to all the families of those lost to battles on our behalf. It is because of them that selfish little people like myself can forget the true nature of the day and enjoy the freedoms that their service affords me. Thank you.

Martini, Dear?

In a previous post, Take the Train Somewhere, I mentioned that I used to fantasize about a life living near or in a big city. I dreamed of a glamour lifestyle. I watched women prepare martinis for their husbands and their friends. Much like the train, I imagined that one day I would stand at the door holding a martini for my husband or maybe just having one of my own after a long day at my very fancy job.  That’s simply not how my life turned out and I’m not complaining in any way. I assure you that despite the many bumps along this road of my life, I’m mostly okay with where I’ve ended up. Afterall, I’ve got clean running water, a roof over my head, clothes to wear, more than enough food to eat, and an oompa loompa as a president. *giggles* (Sorry, I do so try to avoid political jabs, but even if you love him…you’ve got to admit, he resembles a Cheeto. ) Oh and it turns out, I can’t stand martinis! *shrugs* I’m a tequila girl, who knew?

One of the many aspects of Second Life that I adore is that I can live any way I want. Perhaps, I just sat through a marathon of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies. Now I want to live in some fantasy world. I’m longing for a simple life in the country. I’m remembering the glamorous dreams of my youth. I’ve just binged on Vikings. It really doesn’t matter how I want to live. Its quite possible in SL.
So, it is with both honor and gratitude that I can assemble this scene with mostly Fancy Decor items to create a picture straight out of my childhood fantasies. Second Life enriches my life in so many ways, this is just one of them, and for that…I know I am truly blessed.

Good Morning, Sunshine!

April…wow…its really the end of April. There’s been a lot of rain in my area and storms, but it seems we’ve managed to get through the month without any horrendous tornadoes in my area. I get nervous every April because of what happened in 2011. Over 90 tornadoes hit my state and my area was without power for almost a week. (Here’s a link for the basic facts if you’re interested: https://www.weather.gov/bmx/event_04272011 ) It was the closest thing to an apocalypse I’ve ever experienced and I truly hope its the only time I experience anything like it. One thing I discovered was that my neighbors are pretty good people. We came together…shared liquor and resources. My husband works at a chicken processing plant and was able to obtain some dry ice. (Luckily generators kept them in power until it was restored to North Alabama.) That dry ice kept some of our food from being ruined and the neighbors came together to have…well, basically a small block party. We pumped tunes from car stereos. We threw everything we could onto grills of all sizes in order not to waste food. We couldn’t do much for side dishes, but we sure had one helluva selection of grilled meats. We drank, we ate, and we speculated about the damages state wide. There was only one radio station operating and it wasn’t saying much. There was no power across the northern portion of our state. There was one odd little strip of a town that had power and let me tell you…gas lines were no joke! People as far away as Tennessee were coming to Athens, AL to get gas. Ah, but there was a catch there, too. No power. No internet. No credit cards! It was definitely a challenging week, but it restored my faith in humans. I saw people unite for the common good. People that would have otherwise not interacted. Let’s face it…I’m not big on feeding the bears aka making nice with my neighbors. I prefer to keep to myself and keep my business my own. I don’t care who the neighbor is dating or how many men came and went from her house last weekend. I don’t care that so and so has roaches, so long as they don’t come in my house. That week? Yeah, that week we shared real stories and fears and hopes and dreams. I’m happy to see this April ending on a positive note and I for one will embrace the sun. (Not the heat though, staying my butt in the house where its nice and cool.)

Shoot From the Hip

“Shoot from the hip,” is a phrase that’s been used in reference to me…well, pretty much my whole life, by my mother mostly, because I don’t seem to have much of a filter. Believe it or not, I really do have one. I leave much more unsaid than I actually blurt out, but even the best filter allows for something to slip through, right? *laughs* I envy those with quick wit. My wit tends to be a bit slower and my comebacks usually occur hours to weeks later. However, that doesn’t stop me from mouthing off…nor does my weak filter or my slow wit. Its also why I’m not great at customer service without being completely fake. I don’t mind helping people, mind you, but I have limits on how far I’m willing to go with stupid people and I’m sure as hell not going to stand there idly with a smile on my face while someone rants on and on about their petty little complaints, especially when their complaint has absolutely nothing to do with me! Ok, so I’m a little scrappy, but something I learned from grandmother was that its always better to be honest. Granted, I don’t have her great talent for making the truth sound like honey on a warm biscuit, but you will definitely get the truth from me.

Just a Little Taste

So, Josh and I did a little thing with this pose. We both took a picture and mine is the main one of course, but the second one is by Josh Brian. I am so lucky to have found someone that shares my passion for photography. Not only does he support my endless hours of blogging, but he shoots pictures right along with me. Often times to my dismay, because as I’ve told Josh…I tend to create a scene with a particular view in my head. Then he comes along and shows the whole world how I’m not really even on the chair at all. *laughs* #busted!
So, here’s a little taste of our world together…his and her views. ♥

I want to tell you a little bit about this pose, too, because the very talented (and equally crazy), Tracy Redangel happens to be one of my best friends.  And because she is such a close friend, I know how long and hard she worked on this pose set. Not only did she work on it for weeks (weeks? yes, because..well…SQUIRREL)…she provided three sets in the pack in an effort to cover all the bases. You see…there’s a huge height difference between Josh and I. He’s offered to go shorter for me, but I rather like him the way he is…plus…have you seen him?
