You can’t really be in Second Life too long without encountering some sort of drama. You can’t even get through your real life without it. Which is why it always amuses me and sends red flags running up my proverbial flag pole whenever I read a profile that declares they don’t do drama. There are all sorts of creative ways that people will say it and I’d like to believe that its usually added after some particularly exhausting episode. However, more often than not, I have found that the most hypocritical of people are the very ones who make declarations about drama, loyalty, and trust. The level of hypocrisy is astounding and I have to wonder who they think they are fooling.

Its heartbreaking to see how toxic people can be to one another, particularly here in Second Life where most of us have been beaten and broken down so much in our real lives that we seek reprieve here, only to find that there is more deception and abuse waiting for us at the hands of bullies that hide behind anonymity using their keyboards as weapons.

And because of the wretchedness I’ve witnessed lately I feel like I should share a few definitions, because clearly there are far too many people who are confused as to what certain words mean.

drama: a state, situation, or series of events involving interesting or intense conflict of forces
loyalty: the act of being loyal
loyal:   unswerving in allegiance: as
a :  faithful in allegiance to one’s lawful sovereign or government
b :  faithful to a private person to whom fidelity is due
c :  faithful to a cause, ideal, custom, institution, or product
trust: belief that someone or something is reliable, good, honest, effective, etc.

The definitions above come directly from Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary. Too many people in Second Life toss these words around loosely, using them to somehow justify the hurt they intentionally cause or try to cause other people. I’m not trying to lecture my readers, I promise I’m not. I just hope to raise a little awareness. I think its very important that we carry ourselves with some integrity and if we want respect, we should be willing to show respect not just for each other but for ourselves. If you question the true meaning of integrity or respect, but all means look them up, because I know there are a lot of people out there tossing those words around too loosely as well.

Let us build one another up, rather than tear one another down. As my dear friend, Kess Crystal, recently blogged…let go of the toxicities, pay attention to red flags, and do what’s best for you. Being cruel to another is never the best for anyone, so please remember that you can walk away from people without malice.
